Debut game for Victoria Thirds

ANOTHER new chapter opened for Victoria Cricket Club last Saturday when their new third team played its first ever match at an overcast Lurgan Park.

Victoria captain Gregory Mullin welcomed his opposite number Peter McMorran, from CSNI VI to Lurgan Park.

Victoria fielded a team with a blend of youth and experience, with young Ben Johnston from Magheralin making his first appearance, and after winning the toss decided to bat first.

After the first five overs it looked like a bad move as the home side were reduced to 15 for 3. The team never really recovered following the poor start; with Steve Johnston (11) and Josh Thornbury (13) the only batsmen to reach double figures, as Victoria were dismissed for a disappointing 55 all out.

After tea the Victoria bowlers tried to defend their low total got off to a great start with David Buckley taking three wickets in as many overs as CSNI found themselves in a similar position to the home side on 16 for 3.

And it could have been even better for the home side but for a few dropped catches and some lofted drives going between fielders.

CSNI survived these scares and reached their target with just the loss of one more wicket, winning by six wickets.
