Declan lands Fisherman's Cup at Portstewart

DECLAN McAlary, a member of the Kilrea contingent of Portstewart Golf Club, hooked and landed the Fisherman's Cup on Saturday. Declan netted 40 points to win on countback from Paddy McAleese's matching 40.

The Kilrea man, playing off 13, had four three pointers in his front nine of 21 and continued this run of form with three more early in the return leg. A shaky finish, with a bogey at 16 followed by two double bogeys at 17 and 18, giving him 19 back, looked ominous, but proved to be just enough to win.

It was one better than Paddy who carded a bogey at the first and a balancing birdie at the seventh. But Paddy also had a poor finish by his standards, bogeying the last three for a back nine of 18.

The best of the rest (low section) went to Gary Todd for his 37 points. Blanks at three and seven limited Gray to 16 out but a birdie at 14, even with a double bogey at the difficult 17th, saw him home with another 21.

The high section leader was 14 handicapper Colm Friel who posted 39 points. A blank for the eighth and several single pointers on the back nine scuppered his chances for the main prize.

The best gross of the day belonged to Stephen Garrett with his return of 73. Birdies at 2 and 8 were balanced by an ugly seven at the 7th. Stevie steadied himself though and a level par back nine, birdie and bogey for the two par fives, saw him take yet another gross prize.
