Denis wins comfortably

THE seventh round of the nine week “Star Fuels” sponsored winter League at the Brown Trout was completed at the weekend.

20 handicapper Club Captain Denis James was the comfortable winner with a very commendable return of 44 points. Denis opened with 20 points before adding 24 over the second nine the highlight a good spell of five pars in a row from the 12th. to the 16th.

Two players finished four shots back scoring 40 points each. After the tiebreak Malachy Laverty (13) came through for second place with nines of 17 and 23. Malachy despite failing to score at holes 2 & 12 produced birdies at the 2nd. 16th. & 17th. Tom Boyd (8) opened with 18 points before ending his round with nine straight pars for 22 second nine points.

The twos kitty was shared by M. Dempsey M. Laverty R. Milliken L. McCloy and L. Harris. Team “Captains Coal” romped home to claim six league points with the two top cards in the competition D. James 44 and M. Laverty 40 giving them a team score of 84.

Team “Doubles” continued to dominate proceedings gaining five league points with team captain T. Boyd leading with 40 points and R. Orr adding 38. Team “Phurnacite” came third with 75 points scored by Alan Smyton with 38 and Tommy McCloskey adding 37. thus earning four league points.

Team “Burnglow” with 70 points were awarded three points scored by team captain T. McGowan with 36 and Trevor Cupples with 34. Struggling Team “Anthracite” finished up with 67 points scored by D. Wilson with 34 and W. Pyper returning 33. for two league points.

Team “Paraffin” also scored 67 but lost out with an inferior third card and had to settle for one league point with their team captain Ronnie Milliken best with 35 points and Ryan Smyth adding 32.

There was an adjustment to week six team scores with an error discovered when two players were disqualified for not having their names on the entry sheet. This resulted with team “Doubles” deducted a point and team “Captains Coal” awarded the extra point. These were the only teams affected. Team positions with two weeks to play: “Doubles” 37 “Captains Coal” 28 “Paraffin” 27 “Phurnacite” 22 “Burnglow” 21 and “Anthracite” 12.
