Dennis wins at Rathmore

RATHMORE'S Dennis Liken had only a shot to spare on Sunday with his 40 points coming out on top.

Dennis picked up 11 points from the first four holes to help gain 21 on the outward half. A four pointer birdie on the 13th in a more sedate back nine was enough to hold off the challenge of a trio of players, Jon Neilly (14), Leon Stevenson (4) and George Elliott (18).

Jon made up for blanking the second with a birdie at three but, with only one point each from 4 and 5 he finished the front nine with a modest 16 points. From there on in, he scored no worse than two points at any hole and took 12 from the last four, for 23 back, to edge out four handicap Leon on countback.

Rollercoaster would be the word to sum up Leon’s start, 8 at the first, birdie at 2, 5 at the par three sixth for 17 out. Then further birdies at 10, 15 and sixteen yielded 22 back. This left George Elliott (18) in fourth spot with his steady scoring of 20 out and 19 back. He will rue the two single pointers at 17 and 18 though.

Chris Dunbar (2) scored 38 stableford points which converts to a gross score of 72, this in spite of a double bogey six at the fifth. Birdies at 4, 10, 13, 14 and 18 ensured he got the best gross of the day.
