Derby clash in championship final

The clash of country rivals Wolfe Tones and Sarsfields is always a special occasion, and the derby clash has been the topic of conversation since the ‘Cash boys and their Highmoss counterparts qualified for next Saturday’s showpiece. Ironically both teams could also meet in a league play off later in the season should both sides, who top their section, see results go their way.

The gap between the young teams this season has been minimal. At ‘Trasna a few weeks ago, the teams fought an exciting draw in the league, but it remains to be seen how the Highmoss cope without the services of their talisman Kevin McAlinden who is currently on holidays.

The Hoops management of Sean McAlinden and Davy Crawford will have their boys well tuned for Saturday’s showpiece, as will their Tones counterparts Brendan Coleman, Cathal Tighe and Charlie McConville.

The backbone of the Sarsfields side sees a balanced blend of skill and endeavour. Sheelin Breen, who is carrying an injury at the moment, has moved from a defensive role to take up goalkeeping duties. The famously named Oisin McConville, along with Sean McAlinden, Hugh McNeill, Patrick Doran and Ruairi Blaney can subsidise the talents of Niall Skelton and James McAlinden up front.

As for the Tones, the young ‘Cash side will be equally well coached and determined. They will be looking to Emmet Tighe, Andrew Austin and Jamie Haughey who, along with Dylan Hoye and Callan Duffan, will all be keen on Championship success.

Patrick McPartland, Óran Magee, Matthew Hosty and the very young Josh McGurran are all an intricate part of the Derrymacash line out.

The under 14 final is part of a triple header at the Athletic Grounds on Saturday.
