Derby delight for St Joseph's Glenavy over Aghagallon

Aghagallon made the short journey to neighbours St.Joseph’s Glenavy full of hope but returned home with two defeats, losing the reserve game 3.13 to 2.09.

Both games were played with the intensity that would be expected at a local derby.

Conleth Magee put the visitors one up with a point from play followed by an Owen Gallagher point. The side in green went four in front with points from Oisin Lenehan, Ruairi McCann and two pointed Conleth Magee pointed frees.

The Orangemen settled down and with a good supply of ball from the midfielders the forwards were creating problems for the visiting defence.

Owen Gallagher scored his second point to pull his side back to three behind.

Then came the turning point when Michael Johnston took possession from the kickout got the ball to Fergus Cunningham who passed to the inrushing Owen Gallagher who gave the keeper no chance.

The visitors showed just why they are in the top four of the league with a determined push that brought themselves right back into the game with points from Ciaran Brady and Damian O’Hagan.

Michael McCourt had the last score in the first half with a fisted point to leave the score 1.05 v 0.09 in St.Mary’s favour.

McCourt started the second half with a point from play to level the scores. Owen Gallagher put his side in front and Eunan Walsh once again levelled the scores with a long distance point.

When Owen Gallagher pointed from play and Fergus Cunningham pointed a free it looked like the visitors had no way back. Back they came with an excellent point for Ruairi McCann.

Fergus Cunningham pointed from play to put three between the sides the home support thought it was all over. Conleth Magee had other ideas, leaving the minimum between the sides.

It was a relieved home side when referee Sean Laverty blew the final whistle.
