THE two Lurgan veterans teams played local rivals Portadown last Monday and won both matches.

The Lurgan 1 team comprehensively defeated Portadown 2 and remain league leaders with a incredible 23 point lead over Bessbrook.

Lurgan 2, playing away to Portadown 1 on a very difficult and tricky green, did well to win by a slender three shots and collect six points which keeps them in sixth place in the section B zone four League.

Playing on the Lurgan green on rink one were Harry Cosgrove (skip), Ivor Mitchell, Declan McCabrey and Jack Duff against a Portadown 2 rink skipped by Sean McNeice. Cosgrove’s rink was always in command and dominated the whole game to gain a landslide victory by 30-6.

Eddie McCourt (skip), Billy Martin, Bobby Boness and Bobby Livingstone performed extremely well against an experienced Portadown rink skipped by Billy Pierson and having won the majority of the eighteen ends, which were mixed with four-shot and five-shot wins, they won 25-12.

At the same time Lurgan 2 team were away to Portadown 1.

On rink one for Lurgan 1 were Bobby Ruddell (skip), Bobby Jones, Charlie Maguire and Ronnie McCullough facing a seasoned Portadown 1 rink skipped by Robert Cassells. The home rink led at critical periods of the game and while Ruddell’s rink remained defiant they were unable to emerge with a win, eventually losing 19-14.

Alan Briggs’s rink, comprising Peter McGrail, Rodney McCarthy and Derek Henderson had better fortune against Noel Quinn’s rink. They started off well with a stunning five-shot win at the first end and while the home rink won some ends by single shots Briggs’s rink kept control and won 16-8.
