Devine is tops at Provincial Towns

JOHN Devine won the Provincial Town Indoor Bowls Club's Festive short mat singles tournament - sponsored by Eamon J Bradley Car Sales (Garvagh) - at Ballymoney on Saturday night.

Devine, from Limavady Cricket and Rugby Fooball Club, defeated Benvarden's Barry Kane 9-8 in a thrilling final.

Kane looked destined to take the top prize until he drove at the head on the penultimate end, which ultimately cost him a count of three - and eventually the game.

Devine beat young Aaron Tennent, from St Coleman's 5-4 in the semis - a game of nine one-shot winning ends!

Kane had an equally tense victory over Seamus McMath, of Towers, winning 8-7.

Meanwhile, Devine - partnered by Nishy Logue - was deprived of double glory when losing 9-2 in the quarter-final of the pairs by Paul Moore and Eddie Crawford, of Mossley.

Ballinderry's Eddie Marsden and Paul Reid emerged as winners after beating the Duncan brothers - David and Andy - from 2nd Donegore Presbyterian 9-8 in the decider.

The Duncans approached the final end with a one shot advantage, but the Lisburn boys picked up the two required to guarantee them the win.

Marsden and Reid defeated Moore and Crawford 7-4 at the semi final stage, while the Duncans enjoyed a 9-5 win over Ryan O'Neill and Leigh Harrison, from Limavady Cricket and Rugby Football Club.

"It was another very successful tournament," said organiser Denis Connelly.

"In spite of the horrendous weather conditions, players came from all over the country -- as far as Letterkenny and Enniskillen. The snow and frost didn’t worry them. We had a good sprinking of youth involved this year, which is very encouraging.

"Once again indebted to our sponsors, Eamon J Bradley Car Sales (Garvagh), for the continuious backing."
