Did not take their chances

LURGAN Seconds where hugely disappointed to find themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline against Greenisland Seconds on Saturday at Lurgan Junior High School.

They had two reasons for feeling disgruntled - firstly they had gifted the visitors both of their goals and secondly, despite dominating the attacking play, they did not finish many opportunities.

Slack tackling from the whole squad in the first 10 minutes meant that the dangerous, Greenisland centre-mid was able to waltz her way down the middle of the pitch and find a simple pass and tap in at the left post.

Lurgan duly tightened up their attitude and shut this threat down, the sister act of Debbie Neish and Lindsey Andrews holding the Lurgan circle. Also in this period Heather Bell and Ellen Mullen started to develop a strike relationship and this paid off handsomely when a weaving run by Bell set a quick one- two for her to finish and level the scores.

As is often the case the opposition were stung into action and with a minute to half-time they forced an entry into the Lurgan circle and earned themselves a short corner. Heather Bell was out quickly but a slip pass to the left avoided the tackle. The injector moved to receive the pass and unfortunately Lurgan were caught immobile and she was given too much time to blast home and make the score 2-1 at the break.

In the second half it was all Lurgan traffic. Hannah Grieve dominated the midfield while Linzi Dodds tormented the left back and linked well with Gemma McBride. Rose Montgomery was unlucky with a lightening power drive, but again and again the Greenisland keeper frustrated attempts or the last shot was wide or fluffed.

After 60 minutes Lurgan knew they had put in a fine attacking display and sorted their defensive problems but had squandered the points in a season where the big guns will make them work hard for every point.

This Saturday they are at home to Lisnagarvey at 4pm at Lurgan Junior High School.
