Dinner Day Cup at Royal Portrush

ROBERT Barry emerged from the pack to win the Dinner Day Cup over the Dunluce links at Royal Portrush on Saturday.

Robert had a fairly steady front nine with just one slip at the par four fourth where a double bogey was logged. This pegged him back to 17 points out. The back nine had an encouraging start with a birdie four at the tenth and a two at the eleventh.

Another double bogey at fifteen was not enough to prevent Robert adding 21 points to his tally and finishing with 38. Robert’s 21 back eased John Moss into runners-up spot on countback. John had the better front nine posting a couple of birdie threes at seven and eight for 19 points out. The par five tenth gave up another birdie to John but three bogies coming home restricted him to 19 back and second place.

Saturday Sweep

In the Sweep, running along with the Dinner Day Cup, Gary Simpson was the main man, scoring 39 points to win by three. Gary used his ten handicap well to produce a steady score with no major slip-ups. A birdie four at the second hole and a three at the eighth helped him to 20 points out.

Fours at the two par fives on the back nine also helped and, despite a few bogies, Gary logged another 19 for a total of 39. Jock Boyle carded 36 points off his mark of ten to take second place. Two double bogies going out pegged him back to 17 but the second nine was a little more profitable, yielding another 19, which was enough to fend off the challenge from William Harbison.

Playing off thirteen William had a very consistent outward nine of only six over for 21 points. Four shots dropped over the final three was his undoing as he only added 17 for the back nine and William had to be content with third place.
