District League leaders start new year with defeat

Leaders Michelin started 2014 with a defeat as they went just down to BIBC ‘A’ in what must be one of the lowest-scoring games in Ballymena & District League history.

Just 51 shots were scored as the former Social Club side edged out Michelin by 26 shots to 25, to maintain their own title aspirations.

Andy Duncan and David Elliott skipped the winning BIBC rinks, while Wesley Caldwell and Matthew Boyd’s rinks came up just short of earning Michelin a share of the spoils.

BPFA ‘A’ also remain in the hunt after taking four points from their trip to Golf Club, whose only rink wain came from David McCullough, while Alan Cahoon, David Morrison and William Morrison ‘pointed’ for the defending champions.

Old Bleach claimed a welcome five points against Clough Rangers, thanks to wins from Andrew Booth, Adam Chesney, Mervyn McDonald and William Scott.

And in another battle of struggling sides, Graham Maybin, Timothy Rock and Billy Lynn helped JTI to four points against BIBC, whose consolation came courtesy of John Coulter.

DIVISION TWO

Moneyglass took advantage of leaders Portglenone Community Centre’s game being postponed to move into second spot with a win at Services ‘B’. Brendan McCusker and Henry Marron helped ‘MG’ to a nine-shot win, while Greta Coulter and Sheila Smith claimed the points for the Trostan Avenue side.

There were better fortunes for Services’ ‘A’ team club-mates. who claimed four points from their trip to Harryville Community Centre.

Mark Shaw, Joe Stevenson and Bill Kitson led their Services rinks to wins, while Harryville’s consolation came from Harold Smyth.

Golf Seniors continued their good pre-Christmas form, claiming three points from a home game against Antrim IBC, thanks to rinks wins from George McCrea and John Nichols. Antrim’s responses came from Darren McCullough and Tom Evans.

DIVISION THREE

There was a surprise as bottom side Eaton Park won at leaders Maine.

Just a shot separated the teams at the end as the rugby club side edged home thanks to wins from Bonar Hill and George Reid.

John Heffron and Laurence McQuillan were the winning skips for Maine, who slip to second after All Saints took four points against Glenravel.

The game featured the highest rink score of the season so far - 25 shots for Anthony Mitchell’s foursome - while Eugene McReynolds and Paddy Martin also won for Saints. Glenravel’s point came from Martin O’Neill.

Jim Rainey and Tommy Wilson helped West Church defeat Round Tower, whose points came from Helen Totten and Michael Teer.
