Dobson welcomes new facilities for Boxing Club

JO-ANNE Dobson MLA has welcomed the news that Sport NI have committed to provide funding for new facilities for Banbridge Boxing Club.

Commenting on the news she said: “I have previously met with representatives from the Boxing Club and I am incredibly supportive of their efforts to secure new and improved facilities for this highly successful local sport.

“Boxing has a long and proud history in Banbridge, beginning in 1933. The very first gym was located on the site of the Iveagh Cinema and produced many boxing champions. Over the years Banbridge has developed boxers who made the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

“When I visited the facility early last year I was extremely impressed by the sheer number of Titles which members of this club have won including a 14 year old girl who at that time had just won the National Title 2011.

“The club have been able to achieve so much with very limited funding and facilities. Sporting organisations such as this club deserve wide community support and I would pay particular tribute to all those dedicated volunteers who give of their time and provide us with award winning local champions.

“I am aware that the club have certain conditions to meet prior to unlocking this funding and would encourage all local agencies who are approached by the club for assistance to bear in mind that a relatively small amount for initial funding is required to unlock a large grant.

“I am delighted to hear that the achievements of this club have been recognised and I look forward to many more titles and successes in the future.”
