Dollingstown go through in Irish Cup

DOLLINGSTOWN travelled to the seaside on Saturday to face Newcastle in the first round of this season's Irish Cup and won 6-1.

After reaching the fourth round in the two previous years, Gary Duke’s men are hoping to have another successful run in the country’s flagship cup competition.

It was the Amateur League side who began the brighter, applying pressure on the Town backline and on 15 minutes their pressure paid off when they scored.

However this seemed to be the wake up call the away side needed and from the subsequent restart Dollingstown began to control the game.

The equaliser came from on-fire striker Thompson who confidently finished past the onrushing keeper. The next goal came from a surprise provider, picking the ball up in his own half Savage went on a barnstorming run leaving a number of players in his wake before teeing up Thompson for his second to give Dollingstown a 2-1 half-time lead.

The next goal was going to be crucial and straight from the kick off Mark Hamilton capitalised on some dodgy defending to make the score 3-1.

On 70 minutes Savage was at it again, this time with a searching crossfield pass to pick out Davison who rounded the keeper to make it 4-1.

Further goals from Montgomery and a second from Hamilton really put the game beyond doubt and put Dollingstown into the hat for the next round.
