DONAGHY IS AXED

GLEBE Rangers last night parted company with manager Derek Donaghy.

The Ahoghill man’s tenure with the Ballymoney side lasted exactly one year and was brought to an abrupt end at a committee meeting following a poor run of results.

Speaking last night Donaghy - who last week vowed he wouldn’t resign from his post - said he was disappointed but had no regrets about taking the job.

“I have no regrets, none at all,” said Donaghy, who joined Glebe from Kilbride Swifts.

"Myself and the chairman Robert Rainey had a short chat and it was decided it was in the best interests of Glebe Rangers if a different manager was brought in.

"A new man coming in with new ideas will maybe be able to get more out of the players than I did because they are good enough.

"I wish the club all the best for the future and I hope they stay up this season.”

He said he would take a short break away from football before deciding on his future.

Donaghy’s job had been under threat for the past couple of weeks but the decision to part with him was made following Glebe’s humiliating 8 -1 home defeat to Donegal Celtic last Tuesday evening.

Unrest within the committee and dressing room was also said to have made Donaghy’s position untenable.

The club sit second bottom of Championship 1 with seven points having won just two and lost 10 of their 13 league games this season. Donaghy’s assistant James Andrews is also expected to follow his colleague out the door.

The Glebe board has already compiled a shortlist of targets to replace Donaghy including former Coleraine star Paul Gaston, ex-Ballymena and Portadown ace Neil Candlish, former Limavady United assistant Gary Scott, Rasharkin boss Chris Peacock and Carniny Rangers’ manager Robert Young.

However, Times Sport understands the man Glebe want at the helm is former Armoy United manager William McConaghie. McConaghie refused to comment on the speculation last night.
