Fifteen members of Sonkei Judo Club in Ballycastle went to take part in a “red belt rumble” and the more senior members actually competed in a “fundamentals” competition on Sunday November 16.

The red belt rumble team did very well in an informal environment. learning new techniques and playing judo games and even got the chance to pit their skills against other clubs!

A haul of medals was brought back by the fundamental competitors, but more importantly great spirit was shown by those who were relatively new to judo, let alone competing and also those who were the smallest or lowest grade in their section.

Coach Mark Donald said, “I was so proud of the members. Facing someone in a contest with a large crowd watching is one of the most daunting things you will ever do!

“All of the junior members were brilliant in their approach and attitude to the day and it was commented on by others that our conduct was exemplary.

“I personally would also like to extend thanks to parents of the members and also Mark Harris who assisted fantastically in preparing the juniors for the competition.”

The club will be venturing into more competitions in the new year and hope to bring many more medals and smiles back to McAllister hall.
