Donnell goal not enough to halt league champions

PORTSTEWART were unable to halt H&W Welders title celebrations on Saturday.

The Welders scored in their first attack of the game before Chris Donnell knocked home his second in two weeks to level the scores.

Both sides had chances to take the lead as the half ended, but the half time score was 1-1.

The Welders grabbed what would be the winning goal 43 seconds after the re-start.

Despite the best efforts of Gary Taylor’s side, they couldn’t stop the champagne bottles from popping as the newly crowned league champions celebrated.

“We started off well, “ admitted Taylor.

“We seem to do well against the teams in the top half of the league, and then drop points against teams at the other end.

“It was pleasing to see Chris Donnell on target again, he is just getting back into the swing of things after his leg break.”

Portstewart face Annagh United away tonight (Tuesday) and they face the Championship Two winners again this Saturday, at Coleraine Showgrounds.

“We are looking forward to playing on the big pitch, maybe we will be able to take something from them this time, “joked Gary.

“I am hopeful that we can beat Annagh tomorrow night, to cement a place in the top half of the table,” concluded the Portstewart boss.

Portstewart’s final league tie will kick off at 1pm this Saturday, at Coleraine Showgrounds.
