Dooey seals extra-time win for Dunloy

Sammy Moore Final

Dunloy Athletic 2 v 1 Westend Athletic (AET)

A STEPHEN Dooey goal three minutes into extra time saw Dunloy win the Sammy Moore Final and gain some redemption for missing out on the Division Three title to Westend.

In a tight first half Westend were dealt a major blow when playmaker Gary McIlroy had to be withdrawn after only ten minutes and this meant a re shuffle for them which took them a while to adjust to. Both sides looked a little edgy early on with Dunloy coming to closest to scoring when a long range effort from Chris Smiley cannoned back off the crossbar.

Westend opened the scoring in a dull first half six minutes before the break when Alan Quigley won a tackle on the edge of the Dunloy box and the ball fell to David Currie who made no mistake in firing past Chris Brogan in the Dunloy goal.

Dunloy took the game to Westend in the second half and got their just rewards on the hour mark when they drew level. Barry McGonigle played the ball into Chris Smiley who laid the ball off to Steven Dooey who curled the ball past Stevie Greer in the Westend goal from 18 yards out. Both keepers were then called into action in the final ten minutes with Chris Brogan saving from David Currie and then Stevie Greer denied Steven Dooey a last gasp winner as the game went into extra time.

Extra time was only three minutes old when Dunloy struck. Steven Dooey played a one two with Chris Smiley before racing clear and slotting the ball home.

Westend tried hard to get back into the game with Mark Watson probing but they found the Dunloy defence in stubborn mood with Chris McLean and Kevin Martin defending well as Dunloy held out to seal the victory.
