Double succes for Vauls in Hungary

LOCAL powerlifter Kyle Vauls had cause for a double celebration following his strong showing at the GPC World Powerlifting Championships in Eger, Hungary last week.

Kyle, who was competing at the Championships under the Sam’s Gym and Team GB banner along with fellow Coleraine men David Anderson and Alan Tosh, won both the Bench Press Championships and the powerlifying World Championships before being given the honour of being named Best Overall Lifter in the open powerlifting pound for pound best lifter awards.

Kyle’s bench press of 300kg secured him the Bench Press title on the Thursday and three days later he squatted 377.5kg, bench pressed 295kg and deadlifted 300kg for a total of 972.5kg to be crowned World Champion again.

David Anderson was also competing in the 110kg Open class and he secured an impressive fourth place finish in his first competition since major hamstring injuries to both legs in May. David recorded lifts of 300kg in squat, 242.5kg in the bench press and 240kg in the deadlift for a total of 782.5kg. David’s strength is coming back nicely and there is much more to come from him in 2014.

Alan Tosh also had an impressive competition despite being plagued by injury during his preparation. Competing in the Masters 50-55 age group Alan won the Masters 3 title with lifts of 200kg in the squat, a 170kg bench press and a very strong 270kg in the deadlift for a total of 640kg.

The guys now plan to rest for a few days before easing into training again with nothing too heavy until January which will kick of the build-up for next year’s European Championships in Prague.
