Down 1-15

DOWN progressed to the semi final of the Barretts Sports Lighting Dr McKenna Cup having overcome a second half revival by Derry.

Down’s line up changed considerably as James McCartan wants to see as many of his players in action before the National Football League gets underway.

Ronan Murtagh made his first appearance in this years McKenna Cup and looked dangerous in a Down forward line without Benny Coulter. Mark Poland was central to most of Down’s good play in the first half and kicked a fantastic point with his left boot midway through the first half.

Callum King looked much more assured than he did midweek and his partnership with Ambrose Rodgers was a constant thorn in Derrys side. Martin Clarke also made his mark when he scored Down’s only goal rebounding the ball into the net after his penalty was saved.

Down now look forward to a semi final tie against Donegal. This match is scheduled for Brewster Park, Enniskillen on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
