Dromore athletes hit the road

ATHLETES from Dromore Athletic Club made the trip last weekend to Carlingford for the popular 5K road race held around the streets of the seaside town.

Their excellent performances on the night saw them return home with a large percentage of the very good prizes on offer.

The Dromore female athletes had a super night in the womens 5K race, taking the first three places with outstanding runs from Julie Turley (first) in 17mins 21secs, followed home in second by Gillian Burns 18.40 and hard on her heels in third was Geraldine Branagh 18.49 with Geraldine also picking up the first O45 prize.

These performances were well backed up with more super runs from Diane McKee (21.57 PB and first O40, Julia Kelly 23.14 (13th senior women), Sharon Reid 24.23 (PB, second O45), Annettte Blaney 25.34 (14th senior women) and Annelize Bekker in her first race for the club (18th senior women, 29.25) to make it a perfect night for the women.

They took first place in the senior womens team and also the vets team.

The male athletes also got in among the prizes with their excellent efforts on the night, led home by Ryan McDermott who is just back from holidays and also had a tummy bug!

Finishing 13th overall and second U19 in 16.23 with Brian McKee having a cracker next in 16.25 and first O45, followed by Nigel McKibbin in 17.06, taking first O40 with Nigel Greer close behind in 17.18.

Third O45 for the Dromore club was Colin Corkin, just returning after an operation, taking ninth spot in the senior men in 19.09 with colm turley just a few strides behind in 10th in 19.11.

David blakley was 11th in 20.20 with Marty McConaghy 12th in 20.59 and Colin Scott seventh O40 in 21.58 and rounding a great night off by winning the vets team prize.
