Dromore give fans a scare in cup game

IN their Cup match away last Wednesday against Dungannon the Dromore senior team gave their supporters a big scare before they got home by two shots after a tie end.

After having beaten their hosts in a league game the previous Saturday by 50 shots some of the players had the idea of just having to turn up and they would be in the next round.

Rink 1: R Wills, G Dawson, D Graham, G Clinghan.

Rink 2: D McCandless, W Clinghan, R Greer, J McKenny.

Rink 3: B Paylor, T Wilson, D Burns, F Cranney.

Rink 4: H Hylands, D Shanks, K Aiken, A Johnston.

Dungannon were ahead by three at the five end mark. Johnston was three up, McKenny was four ahead while Clinghan was down six with Cranney four down.

The seniors were beginning to show form at the halfway stage. Johnston was down a single and Cranney was down three but McKenny was ahead by six and Clinghan was two to the good.

Another change occurred at the three quarter stage as Dungannon were now ahead by one. Johnston was four down, Cranney was still behind by three while McKenny was six ahead and Clinghan all square.

A good six ends by Clinghan saw Dromore over the winning line. McKenny did his bit to be ahead by five, Johnston was all square but Cranney was on the wrong side of a 10 shot defeat.

Tonight (Tuesday) the seniors are away to Bangor and on Saturday they are at home to Carrick - both are league games. The juniors have a league home game against Donaghadee on Tuesday.

The Dromore junior team received one of their worst defeats for some time when they fell to Downpatrick away on Saturday last in the second round of the IBA Junior Cup, going down by 43 shots.

Rink 1: T Ogle, T Hewitt, G Ervine, A Sudlow.

Rink 2: G McDowell, J McCullough, H Maxwell, T Sudlow.

Rink 3: A Clinghan, A Matthews, I Houston, T Gribben.

Rink 4: C Davis, T Ledlie, J Noddings, S Malcomson.

A poor start by the juniors saw them trailing after five ends by 20 shots with two rinks ahead.

A Sudlow and Malcomson were each a single to the good, T Sudlow was down by six while Gribben was in the red by 16.

The next quarter was even, going towards the halfway stage with Malcomson the only rink ahead by three. A Sudlow was down one; T Sudlow was finding the going tough because the Downpatrick player P Rooney (sen) was having a very good game, turning many heads in their favour - he was 11 in the red. Gribben had recovered some ground to be 10 down.

The game was out of reach of Dromore when at the 15th end the scorecard showed Downpatrick ahead by 42.

Malcomson looked likely to be the only winner for the juniors as he was ahead by seven; A Sudlow, with a scoreless five ends, was now eight down; T Sudlow was still toiling but making no headway and was 15 down while Gribben has slipped to be 26 in arrears.

The last quarter was very tight with Downpatrick only able to add one shot to their 15 end score. Malcomson was still in front by eight; A Sudlow had his first defeat of the season, going down by 15. It was a better last quarter for T Sudlow, coming back to finish six down while Gribben had another bad day, finishing 30 in arrears.
