Drones claim Sam Walker Cup victory

THE final of the Sam Walker Knockout League Cup was played in front of a large of supporters at the Potters Club in Coleraine, and what a cracker it turned out to be.

Paul Simpson put the Drones in front as he beat Lee Hull in the opening frame. Hull hit back though winning the second to level things up for Potters Elite.

This continued in the second match between David Baker and Curtis Boreland, so with only two frames left it was nip and tuck as to who would lift the trophy.

In the final game Gregory Cooke put Drones back in front again, but the game looked to be heading to a draw as Geoffrey Boreland took a 40 point lead in the sixth frame.

Gregory got himself back in contention though with a nice clearance of the colours and he pushed on to win the game and the Man of the Match award to give Drones the first silverware of the season, in what was an excellent final.

The Nevin Cup is now well underway and the preliminary round threw up a couple of shocks.

Five-time winner Leonard McConaghie went out in the first round to Aidy McGonigle by three frames to two.

Another upset came when Mick Murphy beat clubmate Randell McDonnell in a black ball fight coming back from two frames down.

The first ten players through to the first round proper are: A McGonigle, M Murphy, D Reid, C Boreland, M Hutchinson, S Gray, P Martin, B McTaggart, W Reid, P Kelly.

Organisers would ask all players to get their games played as soon as possible so as not to hold up the competition. They would also like to thank the sponsors for their genorosity.
