Drumgor win 400 tourney

THE final of the Lurgan 400 Tournament was played last Friday evening at Lurgan Park between Jethro and Drumgor 2.

Representing Jethro were Geoff McMullan, skip, Noel Quinn, Noel Orr, and George Richardson, and playing for Drumgor 2 were Joseph Beattie, skip, David Beattie, Pauline Beattie and Catherine McMillen.

The match was watched by a good number of spectators who came to see a tight match and they were not disappointed.

As expected it was a close encounter with both rinks playing excellent bowls with tight ends resulting from very good draw and running shots.

It was nip and tuck to the final end with neither giving anything away. However going into the last end the score was 10-9 in favour of Drumgor 2 and the Jethro rink had everything to play for but unfortunately they dramatically dropped another five shots to lose 15-9.

Following the final both teams and the beaten semi-finalists were treated to a barbecue after which the Lurgan ‘400’ Anniversary Perpetual Challenge Cup was presented to worthy winners, Drumgor 2, by the Club President, Peter McGrail.

They each received Tipperary Crystal bowls, as did Jethro, the runners-up.

The beaten semi-finalists, Moira represented by Bobby Jones, skip, Billy Martin, Winifred Kirkwood and Walter Cousins, and the Drumgor 1 rink which included Harry Cosgrove, skip, Eddie McCourt, Irene and John Doone, were also presented with Tipperary crystal bowls in honour of their achievement.

The inaugural tournament turned out to be an exciting and highly competitive affair, attracting all ages of bowlers from the indoor scene who hopefully be come along and take up the outdoor game next season.

Thinking of others less fortunate, the participants subscribed liberally to the NI Children’s Hospice which is this year’s chosen NIBA charity with almost 280 having been contributed to date.
