Duddy victorious after split decision

JOHN Duddy stayed on track for a world title shot as he overcame Michael Medina, in Dallas Cowboys' Stadium in Texas, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Londonderry fighter - who is now based in New York - won the bout on a split decision after ten hard rounds.

Duddy was the busier fighter throughout, and though he never really hurt his opponent or threatened a knockout, he imposed himself enough throughout the course of the fight to get the nod from two of the three judges.

Medina's cause was not helped when he was deducted a point for a low blow in the eighth round, and the fight ended with a bang as the two traded stinging shots on the ropes before the final bell rang.

Judges Mike Mitchell and Charles Phillips scored it 96-93 for Duddy, while Arturo Velasquez scored it 96-93 in favour of Medina.

The victory, which took place before Manny Pacquiao's comfortable WBO welterweight points victory over Joshua Clottey, means the 30-year-old could be back in the ring in June however an expected bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Junior may have to wait.

Promoter Bob Arum is believed to have announced that he hoped to set-up Duddy against the Mexican, however it's believed that the Top Rank Inc owner is lining another fight as Chavez Junior is currently suspended until June 14th due to testing positive for a diuretic in his system following his decision victory over Troy Rowland.

Because of that the Galliagh man is expected to fight on the undercard of Yuri Foreman versus Miguel Cotto junior middleweight bout, on Saturday, June 5, at the Yankee Stadium in New York.
