Dunbarton continue unbeaten home record

The Gilford senior team bounced back from last week’s horrible league defeat at Ulster Transport with a convincing win over Falls in the quarter final of the Senior Private Greens Cup last Thursday night.

Having been undefeated for 22 months at home, the locals never looked like relinquishing this record as they put the Senior Division Two leaders to the sword, thrashing them by 67 shots.

Myles Greenfield and his four romped home by 26 shots while not too far behind was DJ Wilson’s quartet who won by 20. Conor McCartan’s men got a much needed 11 shot win, while Marty Trainor completed the rout, also winning by double figures, up 10

In the semi finals of this competition, the Gilford side will take on Larne on a neutral green and this should be a very good game. Earlier this season, the men in yellow won a close game by five shots so will not take this game for granted by any means. This will take place on 23rd July, venue to be decided.

Rink 1 M Higgins, T Bell, A Hughes, M Greenfield up 35-9

Skip Myles and his rink bounced back with a bang from their miserable defeat at Ulster Transport.

After six ends the Gilford men led 9-6 and from ends 7 to 16, the hosts went on a remarkable scoring sequence of 2,1,1,6,2,3,1,1,1,5 to lead 32-6. Over the final few ends it was plain sailing.

Rink 2 D Copeland, J Magennis, M Merritt, M Trainor up 19-9

Skip Marty and his rink put up an equally impressive showing on rink two but thanks to a superb performance by the opposition skip were unable to chalk up the scores that their play deserved.

After five ends they led 8-0 and by the midpoint were nine shots ahead at 12-3. However they had already been lying counts of 7,6,5 and 4 and got none of them thanks to some terrific pressure bowls by the Falls skip.

Despite continually lying good heads, the locals were unable to gain much more of an advantage and eventually cruised home by ten shots.

Rink 3 J Moffatt, G Moore, P Convery, DJ Wilson up 31-11

Skip DJ and his front three started with a bang and never looked back.

After the first quarter they were already 10-1 ahead and this large lead continued throughout. By the three quarter stage it had increased to thirteen shots, 22-9 and by the close, a resounding twenty shot success was recorded.

Rink 4 C Trainor, R McElroy, G McElroy, C McCartan up 21-10

Conor’s four have struggled to get results over recent weeks and it was no surprise that they were the one Gilford rink that did not start brightly as they trailed 2-3 after five ends.

Slowly but surely the home rink got into gear and by the halfway mark, had moved ahead 8-5. Over the second half of the game Conor’s quartet built upon their lead and a fine count of five on the 19th end helped wrap up a confidence boosting 11 shot win.

They will now be looking to kick on from this excellent victory.
