Dunbarton narrowly miss out on league

THE Dunbarton A team finished their league campaign when bottom of the league Castleton conceded their final game at Gilford, leaving the locals just 2.5 points adrift of the league winners Ballymena.

When the locals drew with Ballymena on July 7, little did the locals know that if they had scored one more shot and won the game 6/1, they would have added the Senior Division One league title to their Irish Senior Cup.

Nevertheless, having finished in fifth position last year, the 2012 season was a massive improvement from the previous year.

A lot of credit must be given to Dunbarton selectors Tony Bell, Myles Greenfield and DJ Wilson - who picked the team for the first half of the season - who made the tough decisions throughout the season yet managed to keep complete harmony in the squad.

Over the final seven games, the Gilford side scored a massive 44.5 points out of a possible 49 and with such a settled team, confidence will be very high going into next season.

To lift the Irish Senior Cup and finish runners up in the league was an excellent season, especially after a barren 2011. Hopefully 2013 will be another trophy laden year for the Dunbarton club.
