Dungiven favourites for Dr Kerlin Cup final

THE final of the Dr. Kerlin Cup will take place at Claudy on Sunday evening 7-30 when Dungiven take on neighbours Foreglen. The first division Dungiven side are strong favourites but Foreglen will revel in the open spaces created by the thirteen a side game.

In the last four years Dungiven have twice been shocked by second division Craigbane and this will give the outsiders plenty of hope. This competition which has been going since 1936 has lost a bit of its appeal since the abolition of the district boards and its is now confined to eight teams where once all the twenty teams in the north and city areas took part.

Dungiven knocked out the holders Craigbane comfortably in their opening game and then struggled against Slaughtmanus. Foreglen had an easier ride, they travelled to Coleraine who were without their quartet of county players and won by four points. Then after Glenullin broke the rules by playing their county players in victory over Banagher the Foreglen men got a bye to the final.

Dungiven will have to leave Mark Craig and Cathal McKeever on the sideline as they are in the county panel and this will weaken them. Foreglen a lively and fast outfit are quite capable of causing a shock and they are in good form at present.
