Dunlops seal wins at Dunmanway

IT may have been a new event on the Irish road racing calendar, but there were few surprises in store at the Munster '100' on Sunday as Ryan Farquhar refused to relinquish his iron grip on the National scene.

The famous meeting returned to the calendar at the weekend following an 18-year absence.

And after a low-key Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod, Farquhar returned to winning ways as he toasted success in both Superbike races, pocketing the 3,500 euros cheque after taking victory in the Grand Final over Michael Dunlop, with Derek Sheils third.

The Co Tyrone rider wrapped up another four-timer at the 1.9-mile Dunmanway course in West Cork with wins in the 125cc/Moto 450 and Supertwins 650 classes.

Farquhar was due to compete at the Manx, but has withdrawn from the event and instead will help his uncle Trevor Ferguson, who will ride Farquhar's Supertwin.

Michael Dunlop halted Farquhar's rampage as he triumphed in the Supersport race on his Street Sweep Yamaha, with the Dungannon man forced to settle for second place on the podium ahead of William Dunlop.

In the Irish Championship Superbike race, Farquhar took the chequered flag by less than a second from Dunlop, who was riding the Hunts Motorcycles Superstock Honda, with Sheils, John Burrows, William Dunlop and Damien Howard the top six.

The KMR Kawasaki rider's winning margin in the Munster '100' Grand Final was approximately three and a half seconds as he won the big money race of the day with Dunlop again second and the podium places completed by Sheils.

Farquhar set a new lap record for the Dunmanway course at 81.075mph on his way to victory. William Dunlop, John Burrows and John Walsh were the leading six.

Dunlop finally turned the tables on Farquhar in the Supersport 600 race as he eased to a comfortable win by seven seconds, with William Dunlop crossing the line less than a second behind Farquhar to claim third.

Cork rider Declan Swanton was fourth, with Damien Mulleady and Andrew Courtney fifth and sixth respectively.

Dean Harrison maintained his excellent form in the Support classes as he notched a hat-trick of wins in the Senior and Junior Support races.

Ed Manly jnr won the Classic 250cc/350cc race from Alan Brew and the evergreen Denis Gallagher, with Robert McCrum taking victory in the Senior Classic race from Brew and Billy Lyle.
