Eagles are grounded for a second time

Kircubbin 2

Whitehead Eagles 1

A SECOND successive 2-1 defeat for Whitehead Eagles, although they acquitted themselves well away to second-placed Kircubbin.

On the Thursday night, Eagles had lost 2-1 at home to another one of the promotion pretenders, Kelvin Old Boys, in a match where they finished with only nine men following the dismissal of Michael Brock and Tony Moran, while Phil Sheldon - already substituted - was also redcarded by the young referee. Kelvin had one player sent off.

On Saturday, Eagles got off to a flying start, courtesy of a neat control and finish by the versatile Joe Kennedy.

That lead lasted until Kircubbin volleyed in an equaliser just before half time.

The Co Down side did most of the second-half pressing, nosing ahead for the first time with another corner proving to be Eagles’ undoing.

Whitehead did their best to salvage a point, with Paul Tumilty hammering keeper Michael Cavan’s wind-assisted clearance just wide, while a Matt McDonald effort, not quite off the meat of the bat, was comfortably dealt with by the home keeper.
