Early starter Laurence takes first place in Fred Daly qualifying event

THE Fred Daly qualifier was played last Saturday at Silverwood Golf Club.

The competition got off to a dry but windy start for those with a early tee time but as the day progressed the weather played its part and was reflected in the scores returned by the late starters.

One of the early starters and winner of the competition was Laurence O’Connor, playing of 14 handicap, who

returned a fine 43 points in the windy conditions.

Laurence did not get off to a great start with a double bogey at the first and bogeys at the second and third. He did however steady the ship with pars at the fourth and fifth to finish the front nine with 19 points.

Laurence’s start to the back nine could not have being any better with pars at the 10th, 11th and 12th. He had a bogey at 13 and double bogey on 14 before he went on a par and birdie spree.

A par at the 15th was followed by a birdie at 16, a par at 17 and birdie at the 18th to

return a back nine of 24 points and come out on top and win the Fred Daly qualifier.

Second place went to Paul Toman with a score of 42 points off a nine handicap. Paul had six pars and three bogeys on the outward nine for 19 points and a level back seven with seven pars, a bogey and a two at the 12th.

Paul said playing in Florida helped his game big time and he hopes to be in contenion more often.

Third spot was taken by David Carville on 39 points off a 15 handicap. David had 19 points on the front nine and 20 points on the back nine.

The gross winner for the second week in a row was Fintan McAreavey with 38 gross points. Fintan had level front nine and a mixed back nine with five bogeys, three birdies and a par.

Fourth place went to Declan McGeown also on 39 points and playing off eight. He had 18 points on the front nine and 21 points on the way home.

Fifth place, also on 39 points, went to Paddy Lavery. Playing off seven Paddy had 21 points on the front nine and 18 points on the back.

Section winners were: 0-12, Darren McCabe; 13-18, Enda Brady; 19-28, Kieran McDonald.

In the senior section the winner was Eamon McConaghy who, playing of 16, had 19 points

Mid week sweep results were: First, Gerard McCoy; second, John Clark; third, Shane Moore.
