Easy victory for Roesiders in Craig Memorial Cup

LIMAVADY United eased into the next round of the Craig Memorial Cup with this routine victory over NI Intermediate league side Strabane Sion Swifts United.The Roesiders were without the suspended Niall Cooke and Michael Walsh though injury but Michael Doherty returned to the starting line-up.

The visitors were at times a little sloppy in their play although the home side put up a decent showing.

United were at little wasteful in front of goal and in the end the margin of victory could have been much larger.

Paul Owens grabbed a brace; one a penalty, Conleth McCaughan, Damian McNulty and Trevor Hutchinson also found the target for the Roe men. McNulty's own goal and Darren Gamble were on target for the home side.

With four minutes gone the visitors almost took the lead when Stephen Roulston almost put through his own net.

It didn't take long though before they did find the target. Just sixty seconds later Ciaran Clarke was upended and Owens made no mistake from the penalty spot.

In the eight minute the Roesiders almost went further in front. Lee Patrick robbed a defender inside the area but his shot only found the side netting.

United were totally dominant at this stage and midfielder Peter Spratt fired agonisingly wide from twenty yards.

With thirteen minutes gone Patrick had another decent chance but he headed Declan McKeever's cross over the bar.

Strabane's first chance came in the 21st minute when the returning Michael Doherty was at his best denying Barry Hegarty with a wonderful save.

The home drew level seven minutes later when McNulty deflected a cross beyond the helpless Doherty.

United struck back almost immediately. Hutchinson drilled the ball across the area and McCaughgan turned the ball home off the far post.

In the 38th minute Spratt once again tried his luck from long range but this time Conor McGrath gathered his effort. Just two minutes later the visitors extended their lead. Owens was the provider with a corner and McNulty powered home a header to make amends for his earlier own goal.

Shortly before the interval Oran Kearney's men almost had another but McGrath gratefully grabbed Spratt's well struck free-kick.

Gamble showed his intent sixty seconds into the second half when he fired a shot just wide of Doherty's goal.

With fifty four minutes gone Limavady captain Patrick came close when his clever chip struck a post.

In the 59th minute Strabane stunned the visitors when Gamble wrong footed Doherty to pull a goal back.

Less than sixty seconds later United regained their two goal advantage. Declan McKeever put Owens through on goal and his well struck shot found the back of the net of the far upright.

Hutchinson almost found the net shortly after when he met Ciaran Clarke's cross at the back post but his flick was cleared off the line.

With seventy minutes gone Patrick had another headed chance but once again his effort was wide of the target.

United did grab another goal three minutes later when Hutchinson burst through and rolled the ball home.

In stoppage time the Roesiders had two more chances. McGrath denied Owens with a very good save and substitute Kevin Roddy headed Clarke's free-kick wide.
