Eimear sets new Ironman record after Austrian event

Ireland’s top middle and long distance triathlete, Mullan was in action at Ironman Austria where she had a great swim to remain in contention after the 3.8k opening leg.

She backed that up with the fourth quickest 180k bike leg in 5:02:42. Eimear once again pulled out one of her trademark runs, completing the marathon in an impressive 3:03:53. Her finish time of 9:05:46 bettered the previous Women’s Irish Ironman record held by Joyce Wolfe and earned her a bronze medal in one of the biggest Ironman races in the world.

“The idea of doing Ironman Austria didn’t even come in to my head until about two and a half weeks before the race,” said Eimear.

“It was just before Wimbleball (Ironman UK 70.3) and I was having a look at what races were around for the rest of the season. I saw that Ironman Austria was coming up so without much thought I decided that I would like to do it.

“Before I left I didn’t have time to think much about times or records.

“It wasn’t until about an hour after the race that I thought about the fact that I had new Irish record. That perked me up a little when I had time to think about it that I realised what I had achieved and I was really happy to be the new Irish Ironman record holder. I was really happy that I decided to go to Ironman Austria.”
