Eoghan Rua ease past Newbridge

Previous league meetings between Eoghan Rua and Newbridge have always been closely contested affairs but last Friday evening’s latest instalment broke the mould as the Coleraine men had a surprisingly comfortable 4-12 to 0-4 home win.

Indeed there was little doubt where the spoils were going from quite a way out in this fairly one sided game. Most of the damage was done in the first half when Eoghan Rua knocked in a couple of goals to lead 2-6 to 0-3 at the break. When Aidan Mullan hit the home side’s third goal, his second, just two minutes after the restart the writing was very much on the wall for Newbridge, there would be no close finish this time around.

Midway through the second half Ciaran McGoldrick finished to the net as Coleraine continued to dominate despite being down to fourteen men after Ciaran Lagan was sent off early in the second period. A combination of some resolute defending and poor finishing saw Newbridge hit their first score from play as late as five minutes from the end.

That was the real difference between the sides, Eoghan Rua had forwards who could score from play, five of their six front men along with two defenders hit the target while Newbridge had just one single point from open play over the sixty plus minutes.
