Eoghan Rua launch detailed history book

The club launch of the book will take place this Saturday evening at 7.30pm in the clubrooms at Pairc Eoghain Rua. Established in 1958 as Owen Roe GFC, Coleraine the last 55 years has seen many twists and turns, some triumphs tasted and a few disasters averted but it has remained in existence, moving forward year on year.

Present day club chairman Brendan McLernon outlined the background to the book.

“The present committee were aware of the need for some type of publication to record, for present and future members some aspects of the club’s history,” he said. “While this publication is not a full, comprehensive record of our club from 1958, we think its sets out a number of the key events.

“We have compiled a series of personal reflections on certain milestones in the club’s history, a number of ‘snapshots’ of major events. We would hope that this is just the first, necessary attempt at telling a wonderful story of perseverance fuelled by the love of our gaelic games here at the club,” said Brendan.

A sneak preview has shown that the book runs to over 250 pages with a huge number of full colour and old black and white pictures. It tells a series of compelling stories from the faith and vision of the founding fathers back in the late 50’s through the struggles of the early years, into the breakthrough decades then on to the recent successes at county, provincial and indeed All-Ireland level.

In welcoming the upcoming launch of ‘And Some Fell On Stony Ground’ the Eoghan Rua chairman said: “Those of us fortunate enough to be associated with the club in the recent years of unprecedented success are all too aware that we stand on the shoulders of men and women who formed and sustained the club since 1958 in the face of adversity.

“We hope this production proves to be a worthy attempt to put on record some of the outstanding events of the last fifty plus years. There are twenty chapters in this book and every one tells a unique story about the club’s path over the last half century or so, it’s a great read even if I say so myself.”
