Eoghan Rua take part in the Gaelic for Girls tournament

Some 16 girls made the journey to Dublin where they played a series of matches against other Gaelic for Girls teams from around the country. The girls played a total of four games, winning two, drawing their third match before narrowly losing their final match.

The first game against Letterkenny Gaels saw the Coleraine girls emerge victorious and the second match against Dublin side Clontarf resulted in another win for the Eoghan Rua girls. The third match against Kilmeena of Westport, County Mayo finished in a draw before the girls lost narrowly to Strabane Sigersons.

This was a terrific experience for the girls and one that will live with them for years to come. The girls involved were: Aine Devine, Aoife Culkin, Aoife Lafferty, Brona McGonigle, Cara McLaughlin, Ciarrai Mulholland, Ellen Ferris, Erin Ferguson, Gabby Boorman, Grainne Purcell, India Cameron, Kara Kealey, Lucy O’Kane, Molly McKenna, Natasha Boorman and Orla Cunningham.

Some of these girls will be moving up to Under-14 level next year and based on their progress to date things are looking good for the future of ladies football at Eoghan Rua. The club would welcome any girls who wish to come along and get involved in the Gaelic for Girls programme. Limavady too strong for Eoghan Rua

Eoghan Rua Under 16 ladies team started well against Limavady in their fourth league game of the season and had the home defence under pressure as they mounted a series of attacks early on but they failed to raise a flag.

However Eoghan Rua battled gamely and in a first half that Limavady dominated on the scoreboard the reality of the game was that the Coleraine girls should have been a lot closer. While in goals Brenda Grant ensured no concession of major scores, the Limavady girls were proving very accurate with their point taking.

Approaching half-time Sarah Moore picked up a serious looking knock and had to be helped from the field at the break. Aoife Boorman also suffered a knock and in a re-jigging of positions Brenda Grant was re-deployed to midfield. Darcey Kelly went into goals and performed admirably in the second half. Naoise Kennedy and Aoife Kelly were now the wing backs and the performance of Naoise again demonstrated why she is held in such high regard.

While Limavady scored the first two points of the second half the Eoghan Rua girls then enjoyed a good spell as they rattled off four points in a row, three from the reliable Shauna Doherty and one from a Brenda Grant free.

Caoimhe Hamill and Niamh Morrison combined well and a pin point pass by Niamh Morrison helped set up Shauna for another point. The work rate of Aoife Bradley, Grace Taylor and Aoife Kelly also helped the Eoghan Rua girls keep the pressure on the Limavady defence and when Olivia Mullan had to be switched to wing half back for the tiring Aoife Kelly she also showed signs of her undoubted ability.

A penalty coolly struck to the net by Shauna Doherty helped the scoreboard statistics but in truth the game was over as a contest by then. The Limavady attack continually harried the Eoghan Rua defence and Darcey Kelly had little chance with any of the goals registered by the home side. A final point from Shauna left the final score as 5-12 to 1-6.
