Ex-cap Robbie wins McCann Cup at Rathmore

RATHMORE'S 2008 Captain Robbie Doherty topped the polls round the Valley on Sunday with a haul of 40 points to take the McCann Cup.

Robbie could even afford a couple of blanks at six and sixteen as they were balanced by two four pointers at the eighth and the tenth. All of this kept Wayne Telford in runners-up spot even though he went round in 63!

With Wayne’s handicap of +4 it is very difficult to get nett wins. Birdies at the first, fourth and sixth saw him out in 32 and put 19 points on the card. Three more birdies and an eagle three at thirteen gave Wayne 20 more points from a gross of 31, 63 gross and a final tally of 39 points.

It took Dougie Taggart till the seventh to get a par, fair enough there were three birdies mixed in with a few bogies for a front nine of 18. Dougie added another 18 back, more conventionally, to finish third on countback from Russell Dunlop.

A good two at eighteen was not quite enough for Russell to get up the scoresheet further. Barry Magee took fifth spot with another 36 with his last six score going against him on countback.

In the best gross Rory Houston took the plaudits with his 71. This included and eagle three at the fourth hole.

It is Eddie Mason’s President’s Day next Sunday at Rathmore Golf Club. With a large turnout expected, a time sheet is in operation, so get booked quickly.
