Excellent win for Inst

COLERAINE Inst First XV helped celebrate the school's sesquicentenary with an impressive 36-21 win over an Ulster Schools Select last week.

The home side opened the scoring on six minutes as No8 Michael Shiels went over after good work by Nathan Rankin and Jamie Liken. McMaster struck over the conversion.

Inst were dominating and added another try on 23 minutes as Liken and McCullough exchanged passes before Liken went over in the corner.

Inst touched down again three minutes later after another excellent lineout second row Nathan Rankin soared to take the ball off the top and feed Farrell, who in turn fed McMaster. He made made an excellen break and popped the ball to Dean Rankin who shrugged off two tacklers to power over under the posts. McMaster added the extras.

Ulster struck back on 29 minutes when an Andrew McKnight pass was intercepted in the Inst 22 by the Ulster No14. The Inst defence managed to haul him down short but from the ensuing ruck, and after some good work by the impressive Tom Burns (Foyle), he broke from the ruck and fed John Andrew (Ballymena) to crash over for the first Ulster try.

Ulster scored again on 35 minutes with some good work again in the loose from Burns and No 10, they set up a ruck deep in the ‘22’ got quick ball, before feeding the flanker who off loaded to the No12 to dive over between the posts.

Inst struck back at the start of the second half as Ali Asghar claimed a loose ball before popping the ball off to Farrell to make an excellent break for another try.

The hosts were dominating again and more good work by Farrell picked out winger Alan Clarke who weaved his way through the Ulster rearguard and touched down for a superb individual try.

On 53 minutes Michael Poskitt made a great break in the midfield, and off loaded to Dean Rankin, the centre then out paced the defence for his second try of the game.

Ulster came back with Tom Burns prevalent in the loose. He was rewarded on 68 minutes with an opportunist try when he picked up at the side of a ruck inside the Inst ‘22’ and scored a well deserved try under the posts.
