Excellent win for U13s sends them into the third round of NIBFA Cup

It was NIBFA Cup day at the weekend and the Northend U13s name will be in the hat for the third round draw following a convincing win over Tristar Boys, from the Maiden City, on Saturday.

Philip Kyle scored a brace of goals for the Ballymena Boys while Ruairi Campbell and Tom Patchett weighed in with the other goals in an impressive team performance.

As the Festive Holidays quickly approach, the U8s, U9s, U10s and U15s are already on their winter break.

The U17s entertained Irish league side Crusaders to the Showgrounds on Friday night in the National League and lost the match 3-1 in a scoreline which doesn’t reflect how close the match was.

James Cameron scored the only goal for Wakehurst in this match.

In the North West and Coleraine District League, the U11s and U12s matches were cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. The League now resumes a winter shutdown before recommencing at start of February.

Finally, the U14s couldn’t maintain their recent good form and lost their match against Oxford Sunnyside in the Lisburn league

UNDER 13s – NIBFA Cup 2nd Round

Northend United 4 Tristar Boys 0: It was Northend, playing into the wind in the first half, who opened the scoring. On seven minutes, from a Stuart Lecky throw-in on the left, Ruairi Campbell danced past a few Tristar defenders, before sliding the ball into the net. 1-0. Following this goal, Northend went up a gear and scored their second within five minutes.

On twelve minutes, Tom Patchett went past a couple of Tristar players on the left, before crossing to the far post, where Philip Kyle pounced to knock the ball past the Tristar keeper, into the net. 2-0.

The game was effectively over five minutes into the second half, when Tom Patchett, after being assisted by Philip Kyle, crossed from the left and a Tristar defender knocked his inswinging cross into the net. 3-0. On fourteen minutes into the second half, Philip Kyle got his second, again reacting quickest at the back post, to knock the ball home. 4-0.

Panel: C McGarry, S Frew, S Lecky, R McCluney, J Mitchell, P Kyle, T Patchett, R Iovu, M Willighan, R Campbell (c), J Brady, C McDonald, T McAuley, C Fullerton.

UNDER 14s – Lisburn League

Northend United 0 Oxford Sunnyside 5: Oxford started the strongest team and took the lead on ten minutes, when their striker ran at the Northend defence before slipping the ball past Josh Mark in the Northend nets. Worse was to follow three minutes, when Oxford doubled their lead, leaving the score 2-0.

With minutes remaining in the first half, Oxford scored their third goal after another defensive lapse in the Northend defence.

However Northend got punished for the missed chances when Oxford ran in two late goals in the match, giving Josh Mark no chance on either occasion.

Panel: J Mark, T Evans, J Hayburn, A Shaw, A O’Boyle, J Wharry, B Millar, K Babuszewski, J Stevenson, A Campbell, G Macartney, M Kirk, E Mc Laughlin, D Dobbin, H McClurkin.

UNDER 17s – National League

Wakehurst 1 Crusaders 3: Wakehurst started this match strongly with Jamie Speirs and James Cameron dominating the midfield play and the first chance fell to Wakehurst when following a corner, the Crusaders defender cleared the ball off the goal-line.

Gradually Crusaders came more into the game but found the Wakehurst defence of Hanlon, Laverty, Etherson and Swann in top form.

Crusaders best chance in the early stages fell to their striker in the Wakehurst penalty box but his shot went narrowly past the Wakehurst upright.

However the Crues took the lead on twenty minutes when a defensive clearance over the top of everyone found their striker not picked up by the Wakehurst sweeper and he ran on to slide the ball past the advancing Aodhan Tolan in the Wakehurst nets.

With Jonny Hanlon and Thomas Brady linking up well down the Wakehurst right hand side, it wasn’t long before the Ballymena Boys drew level in the game.

Following a foul on Brady, Jamie Speirs delivered an inch perfect free-kick which found Jamie Cameron unmarked in the Crues penalty box and he made no mistake infront of goals to level the game at 1-1. Play flowed from end to end for the remainder of the half without any goalscoring opportunities. Half time score 1-1

Into the second half and Wakehurst continued their impressive performance and Ryan Gault could have given them the lead but he delayed his shot in the Crues penalty box and allowed their defender to clear.

At the other end, Aodhan Tolan had to be alert to produce a great save from a thirty yard Crusaders shot. Indeed Tolan was on top of his game and was involved in an instinctive double save minutes later in the match.

With fifteen minutes of the match remaining, Crusaders took the lead when their striker shot past Tolan from outside the penalty box.

With time running out, Wakehurst reorganised with Thomas Brady joining Hare and Jackson as a striker and Brady forced the Crues keeper to make a good save from just under his crossbar.

Indeed Wakehurst piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes of the match. James Cameron saw his well struck shot go inches over the crossbar and a free-kick was well saved again by the Crues keeper.

With the match almost over, Crusaders broke away and scored their third goal, when their striker was allowed too much space by the home defence.
