Fading light keeps entry low

THE last Wednesday Sweep of September took place last week at the club.

Like Sunday the course provided another stiff challenge and again only three golfers registered under par scores. With the light now fading fast only 86 golfers participated in this midweek event.

With a timely return of 39 points the winner was Paul McKernan. This eighteen handicapper went through the opening nine holes with 18 points and this was in line with his handicap. Pars on holes one, four and eight were his feature holes. His play on the inward nine moved up a few notches. He made significant pars at holes ten, twelve, thirteen and eighteen. When the calculations were done he had amassed 21 points on this side of the course. This sufficed to keep him a couple points clear of the pursuing field.

Young Eamon Lynch assembled a return of 37 points to gather second place. This seven handicapper posted 17 and 20 points over the respective nines. His outward nine comprised five pars to accompany bogeys on holes two, five, seven and nine. A run of birdie, par, birdied gave him a sprightly start to the back nine. Alas it took its toll as he completed the back nine with four bogeys.

The third net prize in the competition went to Andrew Bann. Off his eighteen handicap Andrew had the best return of those on 36 points. Andrew registered 16 and 20 points over the respective sides of the course. On the day he was best served by useful pars on holes three, ten, thirteen, sixteen and eighteen.

With the other score of 36 points the fourth net prize went to ten handicapper Barry Lappin. This player had a steady eighteen points over each of the nines. Pars on holes one, five, six and seven were the mainstay of his early scoring. Meanwhile on the incoming nine he can thank pars at holes eleven, thirteen and fourteen for keeping his challenge intact. He closed his round with a trio of pars and this put him into the winners circle.

With 29 gross points Mickey Horan captured the gross award. Off an eight handicap Mickey notched 14 and 15 gross points over each of the nines. His day began with a run of four pars but his only other par of the nine came at the eighth. On the homeward journey he was best served by a birdie three at the fifteenth.
