Failure to get off to a good start costs Town U14s

TOWN Juniors U4 Lisburn League outfit played their first competitive match for four weeks last Saturday against high riding Comber Rec who are pushing for a double after winning the cup on New Years Day.

Playing against a very strong wind the Banbridge boys lack of recent match practice was evident, as a physically strong Comber side raced into a three goal lead in the first ten minutes.

All over the pitch Banbridge lacked their usual competitiveness - weak in the tackle, second to the ball and wasteful in possession.

Comber dominated the half but with ten minutes remaining Banbridge finally came to life and a great move involving Ryan Angus and Gavin Fearon resulted in the latter bursting through the Comber rear guard and coolly finishing.

This goal give the locals belief and suddenly the tide turned as Banbridge went on the offensive for the rest of the game.

Just before half-time centre half Mark Weir got on the end of a corner to score to make it 3-2.

At half time some changes were made and playing with the wind and a new confidence Banbridge laid siege to the Comber goal.

With McKibbon, McParland and Fearon driving Banbridge forward it seemed inevitable an equaliser would come but the Comber goal was leading a charmed life and despite overwhelming territorial and possession advantage the locals could not convert any of their many chances.

Cruelly in the last five minutes as Banbridge threw everything into attack they were caught by two counter attacks to give a 5-2 scoreline which was by no means a true reflection of the game.

A very poor start cost Banbridge this game but the character they showed to fight back was commendable. Banbridge travel this Friday to Limavady to play in the NIFBL cup where strong opposition awaits.
