Family affair in Trolan fourball

IT WAS definitely a family affair in the Trolan Fourball competition of the Strand Society at Portstewart Golf Club.

Now into the quarter final stage, the competition is hotting up. Father-and-son pairing Paddy and David McLaughlin, who were favourites according to Past Captain Paddy, lost out to Conal Loughrey and Chris Lundy.

They must now play another father-and-son combination of another Past Captain Shaun McCafferty and son Gary who put paid to the hopes of Alan Bell and Robert Murphy.

The front running pairing of Declan Kelly with Geoff Walls will have to overcome the holders Martin O’Kane and Dan Henry if they are to progress further. Martin and Dan saw off the challenge of Paul Gault and Stephen Garrett, another set of favourites, according to Stevie!

President Bertie McAuley and his partner Ivan McDonald didn’t get any presidential treatment from Alistair Glenn and Johnny Payne when they met.

Glenn and Payne ran out winners at the 15th and will now play Paddy O’Connell and Sean McGahon for a spot in the semis. Cathal Carr and John Jameson were their opponents.

Fergal Stewart and Ciaran Cooley, having removed a strong pair in Jimmy Hamill and Russell Stewart, now face Cecil Lynas and Walter Brogan, with painter Cecil hoping to avoid any more whitewash and add some gloss to his trophies!

Matches must be completed on or before Sunday 28th March.
