Fan in the Stand: Lyn Kernohan

First Larne match

The first game I can fully recollect was at Seaview in 1976 against Carrick Rangers in an Irish Cup match. We were 3 - 0 down at half-time but came back to level it at three each. We were beaten in a replay 3 - 2. Previous to this I can remember playing either Drogheda, or Dundalk in a friendly, I have no idea of the score, my only memory of this is there was a nice fish and chip shop. My Dad bought me a bag of chips and a bottle of lemonade, which was a real treat!

Best moment as a Larne fan

I suppose it has to be our Ulster Cup win against Coleraine in September 1987. It was all a bit surreal. We had over 20 buses of Larne fans and the was atmosphere was amazing, and the party in the club afterwards lasted for about three days!

I also have great memories of the December day we beat Linfield 3 - 2 in 1989. We scored with about 10 minutes to go, and Linfield were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes which Lindsay McKeown missed. Their fans left Inver Park not too happy.

Favourite current player

Skipper Allen Reid, and also Paul Maguire has been a revelation for us this season.

Favourite all-time LFC player

I guess I have to say my hubby, Harry Kernohan (if I’m wanting my dinner cooked for me tonight!). He started off in midfield, spent a few seasons as sweeper, was leading scorer for two seasons. He played from 1986 until 1994. Apart from him it would have to be Paul Carland - the ultimate professional, and a real gentleman, he was, and remains a great club man, a real Larne legend.

Team you love to beat

Ballymena without a doubt. The rivalry over the years was immense both on and off the field.

I remember a few years ago when Kenny Shiels was in charge of them. Through suspensions and injuries, we could only field a makeshift team. We beat them at The Showgrounds, and our supporters gave Kenny a bit of stick that day.

Favourite away day

When we were in the top-flight I always enjoyed going to Solitude. We were always made so welcome. Latterly in the Championship, Dergview and Ballinamallard are both very friendly clubs who make us very welcome. I also miss our trips up the road to Taylor’s Avenue!

Best player in Championship

I can’t really see past our own Allen Reid. He definitely could be playing at a higher level, although rather selfishly I hope he remains at Inver Park. He has a great never-say-die attitiude and his work-rate is immense.
