Fegan hoping to climb the leaderboard

EAST Antrim Karting drivers face two big weekends of action with back-to-back meetings at Nutts Corner Circuit.

Sunday’s (August 8) meeting, which starts at 11am, is round five of the Ulster Cup series and will see Newtownabbey’s Thomas Fegan take part in the Junior Honda class. Fegan will start just outside the top five and a strong result could see him jump up the leaders’ table.

The following weekend’s (August 14, 15) meeting will see drivers from across the country come to Ireland’s largest karting event with the Precision Kart Team supported Irish Kart Grand Prix.

In the run up to these two meetings, the Susan McCutcheon Interiors and Sprint Auto Centre-sponsored recent back-to-back meetings have given a real insight into how things are really hotting up mid-summer.

Winning however will be firmly in the mind of Robert Devenney in the Prokarts. Even though Devenney missed out on the last round he still leads the class. Although the competition has hotted up, another good result this Sunday should see Devenney move even further ahead.

Newtownabbey’s Sean Doherty will also be keen for a good result. He starts in third and is still very much in touch with second overall. With his local team-mate Fegan not far behind both drivers will no doubt be urging each other on.

In the increasingly popular World Formula class, Newtownabbey’s Joe and Gilbert Yates have returned to the sport but have clearly lost none of their speed after some years away. Joe, in particular, is right on the pace and a string of wins in the last two meetings have launched him well up the table and if his rate continues then the class lead by the defending champion could soon be under serious threat.

Gilbert has also had a run of wins and is not far behind so the next few races will be interesting to see how the pair fare.

In the 250cc Superkart classes, Templepatrick’s Jonathan Adams will be in a three way crush for top five places. Currently, Adams is in second overall but is under pressure from Stephen Foster who will for sure be all out to retain his GP title next weekend.

In the 125cc Superkarts class, James Irvine from Carrickfergus will also be looking for big results. Irvine won the recent Bryan King memorial race recently at Kirkistown - a fitting win in memory of the local ace from Doagh.

Irvine is realistically after the British championship title but with equal second to his credit in the local series then he will no doubt be keen to score big over the next two weekends.
