First for Eugene at Raceview

THE PENULTIMATE summer season competition was held at Ballymena Golf Club on Saturday, October 9 with the Jimmy Gribben Memorial trophy up for decision, as has been the norm.

In general the scoring was superb and on this occasion a new maine appeared on the prize list. A top score of forty three stableford points came from Eugene O’Dornan who had a handicap of twenty one.

A front nine total of twenty one points came from two pars, four single bogeys, a birdie on the ninth accompanied by a double bogey on the third and sixth.

The back nine was slightly better in that he had one point more which came about by having had three pars, two single bogeys, double bogeys on the tenth, fifteenth and sixteenth. But a birdie on the last was very beneficial as he headed second place Brian Russell by two points.

Brian of an eighteen handicap was through the first nine in four over for a total of twenty three points but all his mishaps came on the inward trip where he double bogeyed the eleventh, twelfth and crucially the last hole.

Equally important was the fact that he had a triple bogey on the fifteenth for no points but he played the other five holes in level par, giving him eighteen points on that back nine.

Gerard McCann (15) took the third prize with a total of thirty nine points with nineteen coming from the outward nine of six bogeys plus three pars.

The inward nine total of twenty came via five pars, two bogeys and double bogeys on the twelfth and fifteenth, yet he was one point ahead of John McElroy and Charlie McCooke.

Fourth placed McElroy (13) played to his handicap on the front nine for eighteen points but the back nine saw him better his handicap by two points. A double concession on the par three fourteenth was a set back but a strong finish over the final four holes where he collected nine points was enough to finish McCooke into fifth place.

Having commenced his round with a double bogey McCooke then played the next six holes in level par and he bogeyed the eighth and ninth for a total of twenty points. The inward nine of eighteen points came from five single dropped shots, three pars plus a double bogey on the par three tenth.

The final nett prize was won by Richard McCrea (17) who returned a total of thirty seven points. A mediocre opening nine of fourteen points was not a prize winning start but Richard certainly rectified all that with a second nine of four over gross which converted into twenty three points.

Sean McGarry returned to the best gross podium when he toured the course in level par. The outward nine saw him have five pars, bogeys on the fourth and eighth plus a birdie on the seventh and ninety. The second nine was really steady as he had seven pars, a dropped shot on the fourteenth and a birdie on the seventeenth.
