Firsts turn on the style in cup win

LURGAN Firsts hosted Civil Service on Saturday in the Gordon West Cup knowing that nothing less than a win would see them exit the competition.

Both teams were determined to play expansive rugby and after 20 minutes Lurgan opened the scoring through a try by centre Dean Swift converted by out half Josh McKay.

Lurgan went further ahead through wing forward Richard Shilliday. Again McKay converted.

The home side’s forwards continued to secure good ball and just before half time Gavin Collins scored his first try for the club. McKay failed with conversion to leave the half time score 19-0.

Lurgan continued to show a hunger for the ball which had not been apparent in previous weeks. They wrapped up the match with further tries from captain Scott Gardiner and Jonny Kingham, the former converted by McKay.

Civil Service scored a converted consolation try just before the end to leave the final score 31-7.

Best for Lurgan were Swift and the back row of Shilliday, Keith McBride and Michael Campbell.

This Saturday Lurgan travel to take on newly promoted Strabane in a league fixture. Nothing less than a similar performance from Lurgan will do in order to take anything from this match.

Also this Saturday Lurgan Seconds play host to Coleraine at Pollock Park.
