Firsts win in fitting tribute for Norman

Coleraine had to dig deep on Saturday to hold off the challenge of a strong Lisburn squad and in the end they carved out an 18-6 win in what was a fitting tribute to former member Norman Hutchinson, who sadly passed away on Friday.

Proceedings for all teams were delayed as the players, officials and supporters stood for a minute’s silence in memory of Norman.

It was Lisburn to the take the lead with a penalty after five minutes of play, slotted over from in front of the posts.

Coleraine went in the attack from the restart and after several attacking surges they were rewarded with a penalty. Coleraine captain Mikey Poskitt slotted the ball neatly between the posts.

In the final minute of the half Coleraine were again awarded a penalty and Poskitt claimed another three points with a difficult kick in windy conditions.

The second half saw each side attack and after eight minutes Coleraine No8 Brian Hughes seized the moment when he snatched possession as Lisburn mounted an attack in mid-field. Hughes ‘pinned his ears back’ and outran the entire Lisburn back line to score in the corner.

From the restart Lisburn pinned Coleraine in their own 22 and produced phase after phase of strong set piece attack. Coleraine defended resolutely but in the end gave away a penalty in front of the posts and Lisburn accepted the invitation to claim three points.

With ten minutes left Coleraine were on the attack when Poskitt chipped over the Lisburn lines, chasing up to gather the ball and sprint away to score under the posts. He also converted to bring the score to 18-6

In the final minutes Lisburn mounted a massive attack on the Coleraine lines. The home side had to battle hard to keep the visitors at bay, eventually clearing their lines and finding relief as the final whistle blew.
