Five Mile race is a winner

Road racing returned to the centre of Coleraine on Wednesday evening, with the inaugural Nissan 5 Mile Classic.

The event was hosted by Coleraine Leisure Centre in association with Springwell Running Club.

In fairly decent running conditions, it was Lifford AC’s Sean Dudgeon who led the 164 strong field home in 28:44.

Ballymena Runners’ Alex Brennan secured second place in 28:57, before Tommy Hughes (North Belfast) continued his return to competition with a podium spot, taking third place in 29:06.

In the ladies race, there was an interesting battle between Springwell Running Club duo Sonia Knox and Gemma Turley, and North Down AC’s Rachel Gibson. 

In the end, it was Sonia Knox who claimed top honours after crossing the line in 31:27. Gemma Turley followed just four seconds later in 31:31, while Rachel Gibson completed the ladies top three in a time of 32:25.
