Flying start in the cup for Medallion

Banbridge Academy Medallion XV got their cup campaign off to a flying start with a strong performance against a brave Antrim Grammar side.

The Academy started the game in rousing fashion and a 1st half hat-trick for No. 8 Robbie Mathers, coupled with a conversion from Jack Carson, took them out to a 17-0 lead at half-time and with it they had the game almost sewn up.

However, Antrim came out strongly in the second half and it took some good work from the Banbridge pack to fight back and quell the danger with a well-taken score from Hooker Elliott McCormick.

The Academy had saved their best for last however when in the dying minutes Centre Andrew Denver picked up a loose kick and attacked the Antrim defence.

After several sidesteps he eventually fired out a perfect wide pass for winger Harry Chambers to run on to and score in the corner: a fitting end to a good performance from the home side.

The Academy now progress into the second round and have been given a tough draw away to Portora Royal in Enniskillen.

This game is scheduled for Saturday 16th January at 10.30am.
