FOOTBALL: Good win for Bertie's under-14's

BERTIE Peacocks under 14's collected another three points against St Mary's at Mullusk on Saturday.

In the past weeks the 'Wee Ants' have struggled with injuries, and Saturday was no different with Scott Whiteside, Luke Mitchell and Chris Boreland missing.

Despite the missing players, the side got off to a great start with a goal inside eight seconds.

From the kick off, the ball was knocked back to Edgar, he found Herald, who fired home from close range.

The second goal came when Herald finished with a quick turn six yards out. Bertie's pressed but couldn't add to the scoreline as Carton, Grissam, Woods and Edgar were having an easy day at the back. Despite their dominance, the half time score was 2-0.

In the second half Law put Magee through and he made no mistake to put his side three up.

They host Maiden City at the Uni this Saturday, kick-off 11am.

A re-energised side emerged at half time and it wasn't long before the scores were level.

Luke Kennedy was the man on target. Both teams played some good football as they searched for a winner. The Peacocks defence proved too strong for the majority of the game, but they were unlucky when the Belfast side nicked a goal with seconds left on the clock.

This was a hard fought game in which the boys certainly deserved a point. Well done to everyone who played on the day.

The first goal came about from a cross from Brennan which the Newington player headed into his own net, but it wasn't long before the little winger got on the score sheet with a great run and finish.

At this stage Bertie's had settled into the game as they camped in their opponents half peppering the goal. On the half time whistle Bertie's grabbed their third when Tiernan Boorman fired home.

After a few changes at half time the boys continued to attack the Newington goal and added further goals from K Whiteside, Caleb Wan, Ruairi Boorman and Brennan, who scored another two to complete his hat trick to leave the final score 8-0.
