FOOTBALL: Happy return for Quinner

A brace from Mark Miskimmin ensured that former Coleraine boss Marty Quinn left the Showgrounds happy on the first day of the season.

Miskimmin's double grabbed his side a 2-0 win over Coleraine in the opening match of the Carling Premiership.

Stuart King and Kyle Neill both tested Davy O'Hare early on before Miskimmin headed Glenavon into the lead after a James Costello cross.

Glenavon keeper Andy Plummer made a double save to deny David Scullion and Gareth Harkin before Miskimmin scored his second after an O'Hare mistake.

Miskimmin missed a further second-half chance but Glenavon had done enough.

Coleraine started without Kyle McVey and Darren Boyce with summer signings Johnny Harkness and David Scullion earning starts for David Platt's side.

The sixth goal finally arrived four minutes before the end and it was another spectacular strike.

Scullion was at the heart of it again, whipping a great ball into the box for Darren Boyce to volley home.

After the game Coleraine boss David Platt praised his side’s efforts, but was quick to point out it’s still only pre-season.

“it’s only a pre-season game and you can’t read anything in to results at this stage of the season,” he said.

“We got people minutes again which is the most important thing at this stage.

“I thought we passed it really well and we dictated the game for about 70 or 80 minutes. Those are the things that we asked them to do. But next Saturday will tell the tale.”
